In Novemeber of 1893, Lautrec designed his first theater program for the Theatre Libre's double production of Une Faillite (A Bankruptcy) and Le Poete et le financier. This is the companion lithograph to that program, in which the main actors from Une Faillite-Firmin Gemier (1869-1933), whose real name was Tonnerre, and Andre Antoine (1858-1943), who was later director of the Odeon-face each other during a moment in the play. Although Antoine liked the production of Une Faillite, calling it "the most pathetic tragedy ever produced," the play lived up to its name and closed rather quickly.
