The print shows the singer Marie-Cecilia Mc'Carthy, known as Cecy Loftus (1876-1943). One of the most versatile of performers of her day, she moved successfully back and forth between vaudeville and musical comedy on the one hand, and romantic drama and Shakespeare on the other. Born in Glasgow to vaudeville-performing parents, she began her career at 17 when she debuted at the Oxford Music Hall in London. Her specialty quickly became imitating well-known actresses of the day, such as Yvette Guilbert. By 1898, she was starring in both legitimate theatrical performances and films. She also wrote songs and lyrics for a number of new productions.
