Appearing more frequently in Lautrec's paintings than in his other works, La Goulue was both the toast of Paris and an obsession of Lautrec's. In his portrayals of her, as in real life, she is always somehow affronting the public-either with her brazen stare or, more often, proudly displaying her legs and undergarments. In this staged photograph, she has taken it one step farther, showcasing her very prominent breasts.
