The finest of the six Chilperic works is this sheet, later published in the German magazine Pan in September 1895: an eight-color, half-length portrait of the French performer Marcelle Lender in a fantastic Spanish costume, bowing in response to the applause of the audience. No other lithograph is printed with such a wealth of subtle color combinations, and none embodies, as this does, the opulent decoration of an age moving towards its close. Apart from various trial proofs, four states of differing sizes are known of this lithograph.
