In the spring of 1895, Lautrec's interest turned to the Irish chanteuse May Belfort (May Egan). There was a great vogue for English-speaking women singers in Paris at the time, and Belfort had found her niche. In a frilly Kate Greenaway dress and a mob cap with a big bow, Belfort sang nursery rhymes in a lisping voice filled with double-entendres, all the time maintaining a dead straight face.
